It’s unclear who shot a video of a construction excavator knocking down a large portion of the westbound Washington Bridge last Friday, sending debris slamming down onto two barges and into the Seekonk River.

On Friday, the demolition of the Washington Bridge suffered a significant incident, according to witnesses tied to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation project.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Department of Labor is investigating the demolition of the Washington Bridge. According to the DOL’s office of public affairs, OSHA is inspecting J.R. Vinagro corporation and their work on the bridge demolition. As it’s an open investigation and there are few details available.

And during the past eight years, three J.R. Vinagro workers have died on worksites, according to federal safety documents. J.R. Vinagro is the subcontractor to the lead contractor — Aetna Bridge — who was awarded the demolition contract for nearly $100 million on the westbound side of the Washington Bridge.
