Highly pathogenic avian influenza, or H5N1, has been confirmed in a backyard flock of birds in New Haven County, marking the second time the disease has been found in the state this month,

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island officials on Friday afternoon confirmed the presence of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza in a noncommercial farm flock in southern Washington County.

For the first time, birds in a Wayne County backyard flock have been sickened by the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus, MDARD reported.

Preliminary testing found highly pathogenic avian influenza, or H5N1, in a New Haven County backyard flock of birds, officials said Friday.
