That big body of water to the state's left is officially the Gulf of America in Florida now that Gov. Ron DeSantis has approved the changes.

Speckled with oil rigs, fishing boats and beach visitors year-round, the identity of the Gulf of Mexico has always been clear to those who live near it, until it underwent a swift name change.

Since other countries, including Mexico, have not recognized that change, the name of the waterway is still “Gulf of Mexico” when using apps in those countries.
