In the most critical of current blazes, three large wildfires are driving evacuations and are uncontrolled in North Carolina’s Polk County, about 25 miles southeast of Asheville.

Wildfires forced a mandatory evacuation Sunday in a North Carolina county still recovering from Hurricane Helene, and South Carolina’s governor declared an emergency in response to a growing wildfire in that state. Hundreds of miles north, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service was battling a blaze in the Wharton State Forest.

Wildfires in North Carolina have forced mandatory evacuations in Polk County as emergency crews battle multiple blazes across the state. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency in response to the growing Table Rock Fire in Pickens County.

The wildfires come as many continue to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene just six months ago.

In North Carolina, wildfires stoked by unusually dry air and debris from last year’s Hurricane Helene are burning out of control. In Florida, there are dozens of blazes, including one that scorched about 42 square miles in Miami-Dade County.
