My motherboard has 6 onboard slots, but all are in use (2 x SSD cache drives, 3 x HDD array/parity drives, 1 x Bluray disk drive that's rarely used). I have an UnRAID plus license, so I may as well aim for a 6+ port SATA expansion card.

Mar 5, 2019 · The board has 6 sata 3 ports in which I have 4 x 4tb HDD's and 2 SSD's (240gb and 128gb) and an alternative would be to get some kind of PCI-e card that I can sit an ssd or m.2 drive onto and free the 2 on board sata ports for my other 2 2tb drives. Hope that all makes sense, I'm not sure what the best route is. EDIT by moderation:

That being said, would be be unwise to over provision your PCIe x1 throughput by adding more disks than you have throughput? for example using a 4 port SATA controller on PCI 1.0. Apr 26, 2010 · As long at the BIOS on both the SATA card and on your motherboard support it, then yes you should be able to boot from it. Most SATA and motherboard BIOS' do support this these days. You may/will have to adjust the boot order in your motherboard BIOS setup to get the expansion card to boot first.
