Unlike many Earth artists, Denes makes a point not to disturb, or intrude, upon the naturally existent landscape. Instead, she proposes ways in which her work can illuminate ecological concerns and inform solutions simultaneously.

Oct 31, 2019 · Agnes Denes’s prescient work pushes the limits of the physical world. Many of her structures remain unrealized in the built environment, existing as precise renderings on paper. Her ‘eco-logical’ depictions of cilia, organisms, spheres and hyperspheres stretch from subatomic to planetary scales.

As a pioneer of Land Art, Agnes Denes created Rice/Tree/Burial in 1968 in Sullivan County, New York. Acknowledged as the first site-specific performance piece with ecological concerns, [2] it was enacted ten years later on an expanded scale at Artpark in Lewiston, New York.

In this work, Denes maps the earth onto a mathematical form: a doughnut. In reimagining the globe’s spatial coordinates, she also deforms them, and as the planet bends to a new illogical logic, it loses its familiar legibility, devolving into visual chaos.

May 1, 1999 · Denes’s oeuvre includes everything from conceptual works with text, drawings, graphs, photographs, x-rays, prints, major public and environmental art, as well as works that come close in appearance and concept to traditional sculpture. The only means of expression the artist deliberately abandoned was painting.
